Our mission is more than words. We always aim to prevent and relieve suffering with every action. The Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to people affected by disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. From helping during disasters and ensuring access to lifesaving blood, to providing training to save lives and supporting military communities, the Red Cross is there when help can’t wait.
Anew Day was founded in March 2006 by individuals who felt called to support struggling youth in our area by providing free counseling services. At that time Nevada County was ranked #1 in California’s suicide rate per capita. A tragic statistic. Over the past 15 years Anew Day’s ministry has grown and evolved with the increasing need for mental health support in our community. What began as a small, faith-based organization of volunteer counselors has grown into a full-service counseling center that provides both counseling and counselor training.
AnimalSave is a 501(c)(3) Non-profit Corporation dedicated to transforming the lives of dogs and cats in our community. We help animals and people through our spay/neuter services and by finding loving homes for animals. AnimalSave programs include a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, foster and adoption programs, a feral cat trap-and-release program, and ongoing education about animal care.
Bear Yuba Land Trust (BYLT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, community-supported organization that works to promote voluntary conservation of the region’s natural, historical and agricultural legacy. BYLT stewards a lasting community heritage by protecting and enhancing meadows, watersheds, forests, farms and ranches, trails and parks. Bear Yuba Land Trust is accredited by the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) and is recognized as a land conservation organization that meets national standards for excellence, upholds the public trust, and ensures that conservation efforts are permanent.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Northern Sierra is always looking for more mentors. We have boys and girls of all ages ready and waiting to be matched with a role model. So tell your friends to sign up to become Bigs. They can do all the fun things they love to do already, like see movies, play video games, and go hiking, only now they’d get to enjoy it with a child who can truly benefit from it.
Our mission is to promote the visual, literary and performing arts by providing a venue for artists to exhibit and perform. The Center is available to aspiring artists to learn, develop and showcase their skills. Providing a location and an ongoing calendar of productions and educational programs is our contribution to the enrichment of our community.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a community-based program that recruits, trains and supports volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in courtrooms and communities.
Founded in 1987, Del Oro is part of a statewide system of caregiver resource centers (CRCs) and serves unpaid family caregivers in Nevada County. Del Oro offers FREE educational opportunities open to the public in this 13-county region and a suite of FREE services to eligible clients. In order to establish eligibility, a caregiver must be supporting (1) a senior with limitations in two more activities of daily living or (2) someone who has an adult-onset cognitive impairment (such as dementia).
The Mission of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence is to organize for collective power by advancing transformative work, thinking and leadership of communities and individuals working to end the violence in our lives. Our vision is a community unified in peace and justice for the safety and well-being of every individual.
The Food Bank of Nevada County, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, established in 1986 to alleviate hunger and food insecurity in Nevada County. We are able to provide food directly to thousands of families and individuals with our drive through food distributions and indirectly by providing food support to food pantries, warming shelters and other non profit organizations whose primary focus is feeding those in need. Over the last 37 years of serving Nevada County, we have built the facilities that allow us to collect, store and distribute food for the growing needs of our community.
FREED’s mission is to promote independence and self-determination for people with disabilities through person-driven services, collaborative community partnerships and education, and leadership that advocates for fully inclusive communities. FREED’s vision is that people with disabilities enjoy a fully accessible community strengthened by diversity and unified by a culture of limitless possibility. FREED has a variety of programs centering around issues that arise with aging and disabilities. We work with you and your family to figure out what you need, know your choices and get connected.

Granite Wellness is a non-profit organization helping communities in Nevada and Placer counties since 1974, where our programs have a primary focus on the family system. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.

Hospice of the Foothills offers a team to support and supplement the ongoing efforts of families and caregivers to help patients live a higher quality of life. Hospitality House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit emergency shelter and housing provider, serving low-income and homeless residents of Nevada County. Hospitality House bridges the gap between homelessness and housing by offering shelter, housing resources, and a variety of wraparound services designed to help residents transition from homelessness to housing. Hospitality House envisions a community where accessible, permanent housing is available to all in Nevada County.

Interfaith Food Ministry has been providing supplemental food as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in Western Nevada County since 1987. Over those 35 years, 1,000,000 seniors, families with children, and single adults have walked through our doors. As need grew and word spread, they moved to an empty church on Main Street, and then to a garage on South Auburn, which evolved to form Interfaith Food Ministry in 1987. Now, a new building on Henderson Street is providing more food storage and the ability to serve more clients.
KVMR is a community supported, volunteer based, non-profit, non-commercial radio station in Nevada City. We serve the Sierra and greater Sacramento Valley listeners who seek education, entertainment, and information by providing a community oriented, alternative forum. KVMR connects, informs and empowers our community by developing content that celebrates diversity in music and culture and fosters civic engagement and good will. Our “North Star”, guiding light, are our listeners including those who do not see/hear themselves reflected in other regional media sources.
The Miners Foundry Cultural Center is a living historic treasure serving Nevada County as a cultural arts and community events center. More than a venue, the nonprofit’s mission is to preserve, enhance and utilize the historic Miners Foundry for cultural, educational and social activities in Nevada County. It is a symbol of California’s rich historical heritage, providing an educational and social bridge from our past to the present and future.
Music in the Mountains (MIM) is a unique organization that marries world-class performances with a deep commitment to music education. Our location in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills’ historic gold rush communities of Grass Valley and Nevada City leads a special ambience to everything. Woven throughout MIM is a deep commitment to music education. Balancing in-depth initiatives such as our nationally recognized Young Composers Project, and broad reach programs such as Carnegie Hall’s Link Up, MIM’s multi-faceted approach touches the lives of over 5,000 students each year. We work closely with school districts, music teachers and parents in advocating for the importance of music education.
By resolution of Nevada County Board of supervisors, Nevada County Arts Council is State-Local Partner with California Arts Council, and part of a coalition of County Arts Agencies serving diverse populations in every county across California. A 501c3 not-for-profit organization, Nevada County Arts Council facilitates collaborative efforts that promote and sustain the visual, literary and performing arts of Nevada County to advance the cultural, social and economic life of all community members.
Celebrating and Preserving the History of Nevada County. The Nevada County Historical Society had its beginning in the fall of 1944 after being inspired by Dr. Robert E. Burns, President of the College of the Pacific. Dr. Burns was interested in the preservation of the history of the Mother Lode and gold country, and he spoke to the Grass Valley Lions Club about organizing a county historical society. Soon afterwards another meeting was held for more people who were interested, after which a constitution and by-laws were adopted. The objective of the new organization as stated in its constitution was to preserve every source of Nevada County history.
The Nevada County Veterans Services Office (NCVSO) promotes the interest and welfare of veterans, dependents, and their survivors by enhancing their quality of life through counseling, education, benefits assistance, and advocacy. We connect Veterans to their benefits by assisting in their interactions with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and hope to make the process easier when applying for benefits like Health Care, Compensation and Pension.
The Nevada Theatre is a recognized California Historical Landmark (No. 863). Celebrities such as Mark Twain, Jack London, and Emma Nevada have appeared on its stage. Closed in 1957, the theater was later purchased through public donations and reopened May 17, 1968, to again serve the cultural needs of our community.
Located 20 miles north of Nevada City, the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center gives the rural San Juan Ridge community a local place to meet, to share its creativity, and to participate in a wide variety of enriching activities. We strive to provide programming that enhances our community life. Over the years we have hosted hundreds of unique cultural events with artists, musicians, and writers from all over the world. We also host film screenings, community forums, classes, festivals, and the nationally renowned Sierra Storytelling Festival.
The North Star House is owned and operated by the North Star Historic Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our Mission is to restore and sustain the North Star House and grounds as a benefit to the community and a tribute to renowned architect Julia Morgan. The Sierra Jazz Society is a California 501C3 non profit organization dedicated to Jazz education, presentation and promotion in Nevada County and the surrounding areas. Bill Douglass was the artistic director of the Sierra Jazz Society from its inception, around 2005, until sometime in early 2020. Bill is renowned in the Bay Area and the Sierras as a fine bass player and bamboo flute player. Bill Douglass and Nora Nausbaum are the folks that launched the SJS and it continues to evolve today.
Sierra Nevada Children’s Services (SNCS) enriches the community by supporting quality child care and empowering families to aspire to lifelong success. SNCS is a private, nonprofit child care resource and referral agency that has served families, early childhood professionals, and the community since 1978. SNCS utilizes state funding resources and community partnerships to actively support whole family growth and individualized personal development.
Stanford Youth Solutions and Sierra Forever Families officially merged in July 2019. Both organizations had complementary missions and operations, and had extensive history of collaborating to provide services and supports to youth and families. Now, Stanford Sierra Youth & Families (SSYAF), is a well-established nonprofit agency that has proudly served our community for a combined total of 150 years. The merging of our organizations has resulted in the ability to provide the highest quality of comprehensive services and a greater continuum of care for youth and families, who need specialized services that address mental health, juvenile justice, foster care and adoptions, post permanency, and family support services.
SNMH Foundation’s mission is “To provide philanthropic support for the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital to advance services that improve the health of our community.” The Foundation’s 10-Year Vision is to secure needed funds to help expand our Hospital’s physical plant including the Cancer Center, Heart Center, and Emergency Room. In addition, SNMH Foundation will provide support for community education on health care issues, replace and upgrade technologies, provide access to health care for everyone in our community; and encourage our youth to become health care workers through Educational programs. Your gifts will make this happen.
It is our purpose and mission to provide a comprehensive health program of peer and other counseling support, provide educational support, social development and other community based programs to foster physical and mental health and develop a personalized program designed to develop independence and forestall institutionalization for the blind and visually impaired of all ages. We are able to do this by providing transportation, providing a library of visual aids and through peer groups and counseling. Sierra Services is an advocate for the blind and visually impaired.
The South Yuba River Citizens League was founded in 1983 by grassroots activists determined to protect the South Yuba River from dams. Ultimately, SYRCL won permanent protections for 39 miles of the South Yuba River under California’s Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Today, SYRCL is the central hub of community activism to protect, restore, and celebrate the Yuba River watershed. With decades of achievements, 3,500 members, and 1,300 active volunteers, SYRCL is doing great things for the Yuba watershed.
United Way of Nevada County envisions a community where all individuals and families, especially those who have historically been marginalized, achieve their desired potential through Healthy Lives, Education, and Income Stability. Our priority at United Way of Nevada County is to work towards having all residents in our community meet the basic needs of food, health, and clothing. We work with partner organizations to identify gaps in social services and mobilize our volunteers to run programs to fill those gaps. Our current gap programs include Food Access Saturday, School Pantries, the Nevada County Health Clinic, and Project Warmth.
Welcome Home Vets was established in Grass Valley, California in 2009 in response to the need for veterans living with post traumatic stress and other combat-related psychological conditions to receive treatment with their therapists locally rather than travel to see mental health professionals at a United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facility in Auburn, Sacramento, or Reno.
The Wolf Creek Community Alliance (WCCA) is a local non-profit corporation working to preserve and protect Wolf Creek and its watershed for the benefit of present and future generation, engender community stewardship of the Creek and its watershed, and restore the Creek to a condition of optimal health and integrity. WCCA has established collaborative working relationships and engages in collective action regarding regional watershed issues with a wide range of local and regional organizations and government agencies.
